Our Mission

The Smile Train is dedicated to helping the millions of children in the world who suffer from cleft lip and palate through free surgery for children, free training for doctors, and research to find a cure.

  

Our Strategy

The free surgery and related treatment that we sponsor is performed by a local medical team in a local medical hospital in a developing country.  This 'teach a man to fish' strategy builds in-country capacity while helping very poor, but very proud, communities become self-sufficient, one smile at a time.

  

Our Track Record

Since 1999, we have provided free cleft surgery to more than 245,000 children who would otherwise never receive it.  We have trained thousands of medical professsionals.  We have established hundreds of programmes and partners in 67 countries.

  

Our Programmes:

  

Free treatment for poor children

We empower local doctors to provide free cleft surgery for children who cannot afford it.  We are currently operating on more than 100 children a day.

  

Free training for medical professionals

We support a broad range of free cleft education programmes incl;uding major symposiums, hands-on workshops, and one-to-one mentoring.  Our facility includes the most prestigious cleft experts in the world.  We also offer free educational tools, such as Virtual Surgery software and an online cleft library that contains thousands of pages of cleft-related medical content.

  

Our Finances

  

100% of all donations goes to helping children, nothing goes towards overheads, administration or fundraising because start-up grants from our Founding Supporters pay for all our non-programme expenses.
