December 2007
WHAT'S ON IN DECEMBER
CHURCH SERVICES IN DECEMBER (unless otherwise stated Church Services start at 10.30 am at the Hilltop Centre). This month the focus of the Services will be the celebration of the birth of Jesus, with our preparation building each week as we move through the season of Advent.
Sunday 2nd This the first Sunday in Advent and today our preparations for Christmas commence. We light the first of the Advent candles. During the Service there will be the opportunity to receive Holy Communion.
Sunday 9th Led by Karl Hughes the Service will tell the story of the nativity.
Sunday 16th Our Christmas Parade Service for all the youngsters in the Brigades and their families. Come along and enjoy traditional carols and readings set in the picture led story 'Christmas - Meet the Cast'.
To add to the occasion today's parade will be an out of uniform event! Now, by 'out of uniform' you would expect this to involve the youngsters not wearing their Brigade uniforms - well it does, but it's much more than that! Everyone is invited to come dressed in festive wear. From angel costumes to Father Christmas outfits, from long red felt hats with bells to Christmas bauble earrings, come dressed with whatever you feel is right for you! Like all 'out of uniform' events there is a cost, but it's for a really special person who needs our help. So, on arrival you will be invited to give a donation of £1 to our Christmas fund for Ashit. (More below about why we need to particularly support Ashit at this time.)
This months Service especially for 16 to 25's is tonight at 7 pm at the Hilltop Centre.
Sunday 23rd We will not be holding a morning service at the Hilltop Centre today but we invite everyone to come to St John's Church in Birchmoor for the Service at 6. 30 pm. Once again there will be carols and readings, but the setting will be more reflective providing an opportunity to truly consider the wonder of the Christmas message of love and forgiveness expressed in the birth of Jesus. Following the service the Polesworth Pioneers Band will be playing carols in the garden of the Old Post Office where refreshments will be served. (The Church will be open at 2 pm on Saturday to prepare for the Service.)
Tuesday 25th Carols and Communion on Christmas Day! We meet on this special day at 10 am (note the time) to celebrate the birth of our Saviour. The invitation goes out to all!
Finally the day has arrived. The preparations have been long and for some quite tiring, great imagination has gone into choosing presents for family and friends, children have been on a 'high' for days, yet there's still more to do - meals to prepare, family to visit, presents to open. At this climax of activity treat yourself to a moment of quiet to reflect that God loves you so much that he sent his Son to bring light and love especially into your life.
Sunday 30th As December draws to a close we meet to reflect on the year past and to pray with regard to the year to come.
For God loved the world so much
that he gave his only Son,
so that everyone who believes in him
may not die but have eternal life.
For God did not send his Son
into the world to be its judge,
but to be its Saviour.
John chapter 3 verses 16 & 17
THE BRIGADES
Anchor Boys will be enjoying a Christmas Fun Morning on Saturday 1st December when they visit the home of the 5th West Bromwich Company of the Boys' Brigade. The Fun Morning involves around sixty Anchor Boys from across our Battalion. The lads will be playing games, completing craft work with a Christmas theme, cake decorating and other group activities.
Are you a fan of the TV programme 'Casualty'? Would you like to find out what it's really like to be a paramedic in the Ambulance Service? On Wednesday 5th December at 8 pm a local paramedic from the Staffordshire Ambulance Service will be explaining his role to the older lads of the Boys' Brigade, there is an open invitation to anyone who is interested to come along. Refreshments will follow.
It is intended to have one or two talks each term which it is hoped will be of interest more widely than just the lads. Last month we had an excellent presentation about the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas, this attracted some dozen adults who are not members of Brigade. Do come along on the 5th and also listen out for future topics.
The last nights for the Brigades as they break for Christmas are Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th December. The Brigades will be starting back on 15th and 16th January.
On Girls' Brigades last Company evening the girls will be enjoying music and games followed by refreshments. The Officers would welcome offers of cakes, sandwiches, etc for the buffet.
Don't forget the 'Out of Uniform' Carol Service is on Sunday 16th December.
Caris is a new glossy, lifestyle magazine for 11-16's. It covers all the normal girly stuff - fashion, beauty, music, real life stories - but it also believes in valuing friends, fun, creativity, integrity, passion, faith, kindness, and making a difference to the world. Launched in September, Mrs Harris was able to obtain a free supply of the first edition and the magazine proved so popular with the girls that she has now ordered a regular quantity. The latest edition has just arrived. The magazines are available for a donation of £1.
Where can we get a Wii machine from? Well, I think we all know the answer to that! Not much chance this side of Christmas. Why do I ask, well the Boys' Brigade have been successful in obtaining a grant to improve the games equipment at the Centre, money is coming to buy a Wii machine and an Air Hockey Table. Bags first go!
