4 Jun 2004 - Ken Collis - Volunteer of the Year 2004

Ken Collis has received recognition of his years of service providing refreshments at Polesworth Christian Fellowship church services and many other events over the last 14 years.

On Friday evening 4 June 2004, at a ceremony at Purley Chase Golf Club, newly elected mayor of North Warwichshire Gordon Serratt awarded Ken a certificate to mark his years of service. The presentation included around fifty individuals who had been nominated by organisations in North Warwickshire for their voluntary services, each receiving a certificate like Ken.

The evening culminated in a presentation to the 'Volunteer of the Year', nominated by North Warwickshire Volunteer Bureau from all those honoured on the evening. The name announced was Ken Collis!

Ken, who had considered not attending the occasion - he didn't want a fuss made - was roundly applauded as he rose to receive this further well deserved recognition.

The citation read at the presentation was:
"Ken is very special in the lives of those involved with the Fellowship! For Ken makes the tea! Ken has always made the tea since the Fellowship started in 1990. He makes the tea after each Sunday Service, at each social occasion and at any special events. He never misses! But to say Ken makes the tea is a complete understatement of the contribution he makes. Ken makes an event of serving refreshments where people can be relaxed and friendships are formed. Ken creates that sort of atmosphere where people just want to stay and chat, have a cup of tea, perhaps a biscuit, and then drift off thinking how much they have
enjoyed the occasion, what ever it was. Ken is always cheerful, has a friendly word for everyone, gets on very well with all ages and has a habit (for some reason) of calling everyone George! The children just love his chatter.

In recent years Ken's health has not been good as he suffers with back problems which makes lifting and stretching painful, but he sees this as his role and he is not to be deterred. Offer to help Ken and he has a welcoming word and is always thankful, but offer to do the refreshments for him and you are faced with protestations of, 'No it's alright, I can manage'. Ken has said tin times past that there's much he could not do, but this he can so he does it to the best of his ability. Consequently, we leave Church each Sunday knowing that however the service went everyone will have gone home content, with their world having been put right by a friendly chat and a cup of Ken's tea."

Well deserved recognition for years of service by a man who 'doesn't want a fuss made'!
